Why we study patterns

JumbiScandiPuzzl is an independent educational website about the space between “I see it” and “I can explain why it works.”

Curiosity with a checking step

Visual puzzles offer a compact place to practice careful reasoning. A handful of marks can raise substantial questions: what counts as evidence, which transformation is allowed, and whether the available clues determine a single answer. We focus on those questions rather than treating a quick guess as the end of the activity.

The site is for patient puzzle enthusiasts, learners returning to spatial tasks, and readers who want explanations they can inspect. You do not need specialist notation. We introduce ideas through small diagrams, ordinary language, text equivalents and solution disclosures that open only when you choose.

What our explanations aim to do

  1. Describe the evidence. Identify the features that the diagram actually supplies.
  2. Expose the assumption. Say when a cycle, constant difference or allowed move has been assumed.
  3. Check the whole example. Avoid rules that explain one transition while contradicting another.
  4. Leave room for alternatives. Acknowledge a second defensible interpretation when the constraints do not settle the question.

Reference points, not endorsements

Our subject belongs to a broad tradition of recreational mathematics, geometry and perceptual research. Useful reference points include Euclid’s Elements, D’Arcy Thompson’s On Growth and Form, George Pólya’s How to Solve It, Martin Gardner’s mathematical writing and Solomon Golomb’s work on polyominoes. These names provide context; they do not imply that their authors endorsed this site.

For further exploration, the Mathematical Association of America, NRICH at the University of Cambridge, Wolfram MathWorld and the On-Line Encyclopedia of Integer Sequences offer different kinds of mathematical material. John Conway’s recreational mathematics and M. C. Escher’s geometric art also show how rich a simple visual rule can become.

We refer to Gestalt researchers and mental-rotation research to explain relevant distinctions, not to present these pages as experimental instruments. Nothing here is a standardized intelligence test, a clinical tool or a promise of general cognitive improvement.

Corrections are part of the method

A precise alternative answer is useful feedback. If you find an error, an unclear description or an unstated assumption, send the page address and your reasoning. Avoid including confidential test material or somebody else’s personal information. We cannot promise a response time or individual tutoring, but a well-described issue is easier to evaluate.
